Our Cocktail Bar is Unique in Berlin

The centrepiece and main attraction at Wilde Matilde is our carousel bar – handcrafted from a historic chain carousel. Behind it, professional bartenders mix the finest cocktails and drinks; in front of it, satisfied guests take their seats; and on top of it, dancers, musicians and circus performers put on the legendary Berlin Varieté Show at the weekend.

We love German and East Berlin cuisine and serve timeless classics – some of which we put our own spin on. Our menu features the popular Berlin-style pork knuckle, as well as creative Berlin tapas and vegetarian and vegan dishes with a Berlin twist.

The Story of Wilde Matilde

“Life is like a merry-go-round:
It goes up and down.
Sometimes colourful, sometimes grey; sometimes it spins, sometimes it stands still.”
– Matilde

Matilde, an elderly Berlin lady, looks back with a twinkle in her eye on her carefree childhood, when, as a little girl with her hair blowing in the wind and sweets in her hand, she used to sit on the back of a carousel horse.

As a young woman, she lived a life divided between the fine patisserie at the famous Café Bauer, where she worked, and the wild nightlife of the vibrant 1920s, where she earned a living as a burlesque and beauty dancer to support her elderly mother and little brother.

Over the years, Berlin became too small for the cheeky little moth with a heart and a snout. So she set off into the wide world – and ended up at the circus, at funfairs and in the theatre! On the chain carousel, the Sugar Maiden delighted the little children until her zest for life and curiosity drew her back to her hometown.

Here, she now fills her colourful dining room with life and love, enchanting her guests with homemade sweet treats and delicious cocktails – a real treat for grown-ups. On the menu are authentic Berlin dishes, but with a twist!
